WHY SHOULD MY SON JOIN SIGMA NU?

A COMMUNITY WITH PURPOSE

The right fraternity can give a student a smaller community within a large university while helping him grow in areas that matter beyond the classroom. Sigma Nu emphasizes ethical leadership, personal responsibility, service, friendship, and development throughout college. Its LEAD program supports members as they move through different stages of their experience. The goal is not simply to fill a student’s schedule. It is to help him build relationships, confidence, judgment, and skills that carry forward

WHAT IS SIGMA NU'S PHILOSOPHY

OUR MISSION STATEMENT • OUR CREED

Mission Statement:  "To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth.  To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart, and character.  To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity."  The Creed of Sigma Nu:  ""To believe in the Life of Love, to walk in the Way of Honor, to serve in the Light of Truth – this is the Life, the Way and the Might of Sigma Nu – this is the Creed of our Fraternity."

WHAT IS YOUR HAZING POLICY?

A CLEAR LINE FROM DAY ONE

Sigma Nu prohibits hazing, and that position is tied directly to the fraternity’s history. Sigma Nu was founded at Virginia Military Institute in 1869 partly in opposition to hazing practices. Today, its national organization continues to treat anti-hazing as a core responsibility. At Theta Eta, brotherhood should be built through participation, character, commitment, and shared experiences. Humiliation, intimidation, physical punishment, or degrading treatment have no place in the new-member experience here.

WHAT DOES BROTHERHOOD LOOK LIKE?

REAL FRIENDSHIPS BUILT THROUGH COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

Sigma Nu can give your son a close group of people inside a much larger college environment. Those friendships often grow through everyday experiences: studying together, attending events, handling challenges, celebrating wins, serving the community, and taking on chapter responsibilities. Strong brotherhood should create a circle of people who want to see one another succeed. It should never depend on pressure or conformity. The relationships built during college can remain meaningful long after graduation.

WILL SIGMA NU HURT MY SON'S GRADES?

SCHOOL STILL COMES FIRST

Academics must remain the priority, and fraternity involvement should support that responsibility rather than compete with it. Sigma Nu encourages chapters to promote strong academic habits through study programs, peer support, mentoring, tutoring, and campus resources. Individual effort still matters, of course. Students have to learn how to manage classes, work, relationships, activities, and free time. Older members can also help younger students develop better routines and recognize when they need academic support.

WHAT IF MY SON STRUGGLES ACADEMICALLY?

WEEKLY MONITORING • EARLY SUPPORT

During the pledging process, we monitor each new member’s grade status weekly so we can identify concerns early and offer support before a small issue becomes a larger one. Older members may know the course, professor, department, or campus resources and can help connect pledges with tutoring, study groups, academic advising, office hours, and other support. Struggling with a class should never be hidden. Early communication gives us a chance to provide guidance and help him get on track.

HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED

BALANCE MATTERS FROM THE START

The time commitment can change from semester to semester and depends on how involved a student chooses to become. Members may attend chapter meetings, new-member education, service projects, social events, brotherhood activities, intramurals, recruitment, and leadership programs. Holding an officer or committee position naturally adds responsibility. The key is balance. Classes, health, work, and personal responsibilities still come first. Fraternity involvement should add structure, relationships, and experiences to college without taking over a student’s schedule

CAN HE JOIN OTHER ORGANIZATIONS?

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT IS ENCOURAGED

Absolutely. Students should be encouraged to explore the university and build a college experience that includes several interests. That can mean athletics, clubs, student government, academic organizations, professional groups, campus jobs, volunteer work, faith-based organizations, or other activities. Sigma Nu’s leadership approach is meant to complement those experiences, not replace them. Being active in different parts of campus can help a student meet new people, develop different skills, and discover opportunities he may not have found otherwise.

IS SIGMA NU MOSTLY SOCIAL?

CLEAR RULES AROUND SOCIAL EVENTS

No. We are an Honor fraternity.  Not a club.  Social events and friendships are part of Sigma Nu life, but they should not define the entire experience. A strong chapter also places value on academics, leadership development, philanthropy, community service, accountability, networking, and learning how to work with people from different backgrounds. Sigma Nu’s LEAD program reinforces those areas through discussions, exercises, simulations, and practical experiences. The best fraternity experience gives a student meaningful friendships while also challenging him to grow, contribute, and take responsibility.

HOW DOES SIGMA NU HANDLE SAFETY?

PHYSICAL & MENTAL SECURITY IS A PRIORITY

Sigma Nu uses risk-reduction policies and educational resources that address respect, healthy relationships, mental health, and safer chapter events. Those policies establish clear expectations, but safety also depends on members making responsible decisions in real situations. Brothers understand that looking out for one another is a shared responsibility and a priority within the chapter. Members are expected to protect themselves, support each other, and respect the people around them. Looking out for one another and making thoughtful decisions are important parts of a strong brotherhood.

WHAT LEADERSHIP PATHS ARE AVAILABLE

REAL RESPONSIBILITY • REAL EXPERIENCE

Sigma Nu is a student-run organization, so members can gain practical leadership experience early in college. Opportunities may include executive positions, committee leadership, recruitment, philanthropy, academics, risk management, communications, budgeting, event planning, and chapter operations. Members learn by working with peers, solving problems, organizing people, and being accountable for results. Sigma Nu’s LEAD program adds structured leadership development throughout college. These experiences can help students become stronger communicators, better teammates, and more confident decision makers.

HOW DOES SIGMA NU GIVE BACK?

COMMUNITY SERVICE & PHILANTHROPY

Giving back is an important part of the Sigma Nu experience. Members take part in philanthropy events, campus initiatives, and community service projects that allow them to support causes larger than themselves. These experiences encourage brothers to work together, meet people throughout the community, and understand the impact their time and effort can have. Service also helps develop empathy, leadership, teamwork, and a stronger sense of responsibility to the campus and community they represent.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ACCEPTING A BID

YOUR SON'S JOURNEY BEGINS

Accepting a bid begins the new-member experience. This period is designed to introduce a student to Sigma Nu’s history, values, expectations, brotherhood, chapter operations, leadership, and the responsibilities that come with membership. Sigma Nu’s Phase I LEAD programming for Candidates also covers ethical leadership, fraternity expectations, and health & safety Policy. The process should be educational, structured, and respectful. It is meant to prepare a student for membership, not test how much discomfort he is willing to endure.

ARE NEW MEMBERS TREATED DIFFERENTLY

RESPECT AT ALL TIMES

New members will naturally have things to learn before becoming initiated brothers, but being new should never mean being treated as inferior. Sigma Nu states that members should be treated with respect and fraternal regard regardless of age or tenure. The new-member period should focus on learning the fraternity’s values, understanding expectations, building relationships, and preparing for active membership. Respect should be present from the beginning. It should never have to be earned through humiliation, fear, or degrading treatment.

HOW ARE FAMILIES INVOLVED?

STAYING CONNECTED

Parents should give college students room to grow independently while still staying connected to their experience. Sigma Nu also creates opportunities for families to be part of chapter life through events like Parents Weekend, Father’s Day, and Mother’s Day gatherings at the house. These events give parents a chance to meet brothers, see the chapter environment, and share in their son’s college experience. Staying involved does not mean managing every decision; it means remaining present, supportive, and connected
