COACHED SORORITY PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS
A PANHELLENIC TRADITION AT NIU
For years, Sigma Nu Theta Eta has been trusted in the trenches by sorority teams chasing a PHC Women’s Tugs championship. From Alpha Phi to Tri Sigma to Alpha Sigma Alpha, these teams brought their own pride, talent, and toughness to the rope. Our role was to help sharpen preparation, build confidence, and guide each group toward the discipline, trust, and endurance needed to finish as champions.
GENERATIONS OF WOMEN'S TUGS
PRIDE • PHILANTHROPY • COMPETITION
Each fall, NIU’s Panhellenic community carries forward the tradition of Women’s Tugs, a competitive philanthropy event where sorority teams test their preparation, endurance, and trust on the rope. Over time, the event has grown into a defining part of Greek life at Northern Illinois University, bringing chapters, coaches, alumni, and supporters together for a tradition rooted in competition, campus spirit, and giving back.

2018 ALPHA PHI PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS
A BATTLE TO THE FINISH
Alpha Phi’s 2018 championship run started fast and finished with a fight. Coached by Sigma Nu, they opened by taking two ropes from Alpha Delta Pi, then earned another two-rope win over Delta Zeta to reach the final. The title match against Tri Sigma turned into a thirty-minute test of endurance, technique, and trust. Alpha Phi held strong when it mattered most, closing the season with a championship built through preparation and belief.

2019 ALPHA PHI PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS
A CHAMPIONSHIP RETURN
The following year, Alpha Phi returned to PHC Tugs with Sigma Nu back in their corner and a higher standard to defend. After winning it all in 2018, the challenge became staying hungry, sharpening technique, and carrying championship confidence into a new season. Their preparation focused on communication, conditioning, and trust on the rope. The 2019 campaign continued a strong Alpha Phi and Sigma Nu partnership rooted in effort, accountability, and competitive pride.

2021 TRI-SIGS PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS
THE RETURN OF WOMEN'S TUGS
After the COVID pause, PHC Women’s Tugs returned to NIU in 2021, bringing the trenches back to campus and giving Sigma Sigma Sigma a chance to make its mark. With Sigma Nu helping guide their training, Tri Sigma competed in an elimination bracket outside the NIU Recreation Center. Their title-winning run included a victory over Alpha Sigma Alpha and helped support Circle of Sisterhood, turning the comeback season into a championship with real meaning.

2022 TRI-SIGS PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS
BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS
Tri Sigma came into 2022 with a title to defend and the pressure that comes with being the team everyone wants to beat. Coached again by Sigma Nu, they met Alpha Phi in the finals and battled through an unforgettable first rope that lasted one hour and four minutes. Their poise, conditioning, and toughness carried them through the championship match, securing back to back PHC Women’s Tugs titles while the event supported Circle of Sisterhood.

2024 ASA PHC TUGS CHAMPIONS

Their championship was a breakthrough built on disciplined training, belief in the process, and the toughness to finish together.
