SIGMA NU FRATERNITY ESTABLISHED IN 1970
The history of Sigma Nu at Northern Illinois University did not begin with a charter or a set of Greek letters. It began in 1966, when twenty-three NIU students came together to create a local fraternity they called Beta Phi Gamma. What started as a small brotherhood built around scholarship, athletics, service, and friendship soon developed a meaningful presence on campus. Within a few years, those young men began searching for a national fraternity that shared the principles and character they valued. They found that home in Sigma Nu. From Beta Phi Gamma to the founding of Theta Eta, from the chapter houses and traditions of earlier generations to a closure, return, and rebuilding, the story of Theta Eta is ultimately about the men who carried the brotherhood forward. More than fifty years later, that story continues to be written at Northern Illinois University.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
BETA PHI GAMMA • 1966
In 1966, twenty-three Northern Illinois University students formed Beta Phi Gamma, a local fraternity built around scholarship, athletics, service, and brotherhood. Their vision created the foundation for what would become Sigma Nu’s Theta Eta Chapter.
A BROTHERHOOD TAKES SHAPE
GROWTH, SERVICE & CAMPUS LIFE • 1968
Within two years, Beta Phi Gamma had grown to 43 members, earned first place in NIU’s Homecoming house-decoration competition, competed in athletics, and expanded its philanthropic efforts through an annual blood drive supporting leukemia research.

THE ROAD TO SIGMA NU • 1969
By 1969, Beta Phi Gamma had established a stronger campus presence, moved into 832 Hillcrest, continued its Operation Lifeline blood drive, and began pursuing affiliation with a national fraternity whose values matched its own.
THETA ETA IS BORN
SIGMA NU CHARTERED AT NIU • APRIL 19, 1970
After years of growth as Beta Phi Gamma, the brotherhood found its national home in Sigma Nu. The local fraternity began its affiliation process in 1969, drawn to Sigma Nu’s principles of Love, Honor, and Truth. On April 19, 1970, the group was formally chartered as the Theta Eta Chapter at Northern Illinois University, beginning a new era while carrying forward the brotherhood, traditions, and identity its founders had already built.

THE EARLY THETA ETA YEARS • 1970
The years following chartering were about establishing Theta Eta’s place within both Sigma Nu and the NIU community. Brothers took on chapter leadership roles, participated in Greek Week, athletics, rush, philanthropy, and campus organizations, while building traditions that would shape future generations. These early members transformed a newly chartered fraternity into a lasting brotherhood, creating the structure, expectations, and culture that would define Theta Eta throughout its first decades on campus.

THE BROTHERHOOD NEVER ENDED
THE CHAPTER PAUSED • 1997
In 1997, Theta Eta’s original chapter era came to an end. The chapter closed after more than two decades at NIU, leaving behind generations of brothers, traditions, friendships, and a legacy that would not disappear. Nearly a decade later, that history became the foundation for a determined effort to bring Sigma Nu back to Northern Illinois University and restore Theta Eta for an entirely new generation of students at NIU.
THE ROAD BACK
RECOLONIZATION BEGINS • 2004–2006
The path back began before recolonization itself. By 2004, Sigma Nu had been identified among fraternities approved to return to NIU, creating an opportunity for alumni, national leadership, and a new group of students to rebuild Theta Eta. In fall 2006, the chapter recolonized, beginning the demanding process of reestablishing its standards, brotherhood, campus presence, and connection to the generations of Theta Eta men who had proudly come before them.
THETA ETA RETURNS
RECHARTERED AT NIU • 2008
Theta Eta’s rebuilding effort reached a defining milestone in spring 2008, when the chapter regained its charter at Northern Illinois University. The achievement represented more than official recognition—it confirmed that a new generation had successfully restored Sigma Nu’s presence, standards, and brotherhood at NIU. With the charter returned, Theta Eta could once again build traditions, develop leaders, strengthen alumni relationships, and add new chapters to a history that began more than four decades earlier.
CARRYING THE LEGACY FORWARD
BLACKHAWK ROAD & TODAY • 2018 - PRESENT
In 2018, Theta Eta moved to 1114 Blackhawk Road, giving the chapter a new home for brotherhood, leadership, and alumni connection. Since then, the chapter has continued building on more than five decades of history through campus involvement, chapter traditions, competition, alumni engagement, and the continued development of its members. More than 750 men have now been initiated into Theta Eta, connecting today’s brotherhood to generations who proudly came before them.
